Rozsa Center, Rabbit Island Foundation Presents Keweenaw Inspired Performance as World Premiere | News, Sports, Jobs


HOUGHTON – New York-based contemporary dance company Abarukas, directed by choreographer Yoshito Sakuraba, presents a new performance to an acclaimed live score by London-based Israeli composer Na’ama Zisser.

Anchorage World Premiere appears on stage at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts this Saturday, as a collaboration between the Rozsa and the Rabbit Island Foundation, a unique concept that offers a composer and choreographer who had never encountered the opportunity. to live on an isolated ecological island in Lake Superior and explore different collaborative approaches.

During this time, the artists have a space for research and reflection, tackling themes of wilderness, nature, the environment and the human experience. The Rosza Center for the Performing Arts provides support and resources for artists to achieve this collaboration and bring Anchorage World Premiere to life. This all-new performance weaves a story inspired by the two artists’ shared experiences on Rabbit Island, investing in visual and theatrical presentations with dynamic choreography and live musicians on stage. The performance will mark the culmination of their residency. Choreographer Yoshito Sakuraba and composer Na’ama Zisser have been selected for the 2019 Rabbit Island Choreographer and Composer’s First Residency 2019, held on Rabbit Island in partnership with the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts at Michigan Technological University. Na’ama Zisser is a London composer from Israel, where she grew up in an Orthodox Jewish background before moving to the UK. She recently completed her doctorate as Composer in Residence at the Royal Opera House and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she composed a new opera MAMZER / BASTARD, the first opera to feature and reference orthodox cantorial music. -juive with a role written for a cantor. Na’ama has composed and worked with a long list of groups, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Contemporary Orchestra, the Aurora Orchestra, the DanceUK and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. His work has been performed at various venues which include a number of prominent performance spaces across London, and has been shown on the BBC and other radio stations.

Zisser artist statement: “My work is visual and often collaborative with other art forms; with an emphasis on opera, contemporary dance, theatrical performances, cinema and instrumental music. My music is interested in intonation, textures, repetition, intimacy and nostalgia, and has been described as “free from clichés” (The Guardian) and “hauntingly melodic” (the stage). I have always been interested in using found musical material, drawing inspiration from my environment and my personal experiences. I am interested in storytelling and often push myself to address issues of identity and emotional authenticity in the cultural landscape in which I operate.

Yoshito Sakuraba is a New York choreographer from Japan. He is the artistic director of the Abarukas dance company, which he founded in 2012. His work has been seen in Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Israel, Mexico and the United States. Competition at the NW Dance Project and Choreographic Shindig at Whim W’Him; the prize for the best choreography in Italy by FINI Dance; and Audience Award at the Masdanza International Contemporary Dance Festival in Spain. His work has been performed in many venues in New York and around the world.

Sakuraba Artist Statement: “It all starts with an idea or an image, and I let it grow until it doesn’t. In my dance creation process, I find a way to push boundaries and create imaginative images by providing sensation, resonance or exhilaration with the work. Afterward, I build a visual storyline and weave a narrative that resonates with ideas of love, loss, and human struggle. I appreciate originality, style, design, approach, technique and theatricality. Theatricality, however, is perhaps the main focus of all my past work. For me, it represents the density of signs and sensations built on stage from the first light signal; it is the ecumenical perception of the sensual artifice – gesture, tone, distance, substance, light – that submerges the text under the profusion of its outward language, and the belief that dance is the most powerful way to tell a story .
