First ever Muskegon Pride Festival this weekend

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Muskegon’s first-ever Pride kicks off tomorrow. Downtown will be filled with fun, vendors, and most importantly, inclusiveness for all.

The Muskegon Pride Center worked with the city and businesses to host the first-ever Muskegon Pride Festival. President Jeffrey Pienela says the weekend is long in coming.

“So from the roundabout to Western, from the roundabout to Jefferson, there will be 80 vendors. So it’s huge, huge, huge, huge. And then we’re playing in the sandbox, or the sandbox. social sand,” Pienela said.

Pienela continued, “We have the drag queen Story Hour, where, you know, it’s family-friendly. So drag queens read like a kid’s LGBTQ book.”

Big names head to the shores of the lake like Ru Paul’s Drag Race’s Deja Skye. Mayor Ken Johnson will speak and local artists will also take the stage.

Additional Muskegon Police patrols will keep the streets safe. From food to art, activities and shopping, even something called “Free Mom Hugs”.

“It’s there, you know, if a child or a person doesn’t have support at home, or from their family, they can come and they can hug. You know, until they’re special and beautiful and important. So that’s really important. It’ll be there. We probably have 30 moms at this point, which is great,” Pienela said.

Pienela continued, “It’s going to be a game-changer for a lot of people. And I think it’s about time.”

Muskegon Pride runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 4, it’s free and open to everyone. The after party will take place at Unruly Brewing from 8:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. You can get tickets for the after party here:
