Fine Arts Building Gallery Welcomes SCSU Graduate | Local
South Carolina State University’s Fine Arts Building (FAB) Gallery will present “What Is Man?”, a collection of paintings, mixed media and found object assemblages by the Colombian artist and educator Keith Tolen, on display from February 8 to March 4, 2022.
“What is man? is a reflection on the broader personal and societal identity surrounding personality and features a diverse body of work ranging from printmaking, traditional painting, collage and found objects.
In addition to his exhibit, Tolen will be a guest artist on the SC State campus Feb. 7-10, when he speaks with various classes in the visual arts program. He will also publish a fine art print edition in conjunction with printmaking faculty member Ian Welch.
Tolen graduated in 1979 from SC State’s visual arts program and was an art teacher at Camden Middle School in Camden for 30 years.
After retiring from public teaching in 2017, Tolen has dedicated himself to his studio art practice and currently owns and operates Redbowtie Group LLC, an arts outreach and advocacy group. Tolen recently collaborated with One Columbia on a mural project in the Vista neighborhood of Columbia. He was also the 2021 Artist-in-Residence at the Latimer Manor Resort in association with the Nickelodeon Theater and the Columbia Film Festival.
Due to recent spikes in COVID-19 cases, no opening reception is scheduled, with tentative plans for a closing reception on Wednesday, March 3, from noon to 2 p.m. Further details are to be announced.
