Charlotte SCREAM! The festival returns to Uptown in April

Charlotte SCREAM! is back. With nearly 200 installations, performances, events and activations, the multi-week festival takes over downtown from April 1-17. This is a long-awaited return for Charlotte Scream!, which is presented by Atrium Health and Bank of America and produced by Charlotte Center City Partners. But that’s why its charge, showcasing the creativity, innovation, diversity and resilience of our community, is so important in 2022.

It does just that with what organizers call its “pillars” –art, food, the musicand ideas. Highlights of his schedule always updated and expanding of activities allude to the massive reach of this year’s festival. Almost all events are outdoors, free and open to the public without tickets.

In terms of dining, a standout event is the Charlotte StrEATs Festival, celebrating the city’s neighborhood chefs, organized by Unpretentious Palate. This “Food Pillar” of the festival, which also includes food trucks and tasting menus from downtown restaurants, is sponsored by Compass Group.

Visual art installations, sponsored by Lowes, can be found at Levine Avenue of the Arts, The Green, Romare Bearden Park and in the buildings, plazas and alleys of Uptown. Expect the return of the hugely popular interactive installation “Impulse”, with its iconic huge light-up seesaws on Levine Avenue of the Arts.

And don’t forget April Festival Sounds: The musical offerings, sponsored by Ally, include a range of genres. Look for performances by William Close and the Earth Harp collective; immersive music and Indie Fest light show with local artists; the R&B Battle Jam music contest; and a list of ongoing performances scattered throughout those weeks.

Also, look for an ideas conference hosted by the Charlotte Center for the Humanities and Civic Imagination. From April 8-10, this component includes panel discussions, civic reflection conversations, an open-mic poetry event, story workshops, and more.
